Background on the Novel
Brandon Sanderson, fantasy’s newest master tale spinner, author of the acclaimed debut Elantris, dares to turn a genre on its head by asking a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? What kind of world results when the Dark Lord is in charge? The answer will be found in the Mistborn Trilogy, a saga of surprises and
magical martial-arts action that begins in Mistborn.
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the “Sliver of Infinity,” reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler’s most hellish prison. Kelsier “snapped” and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.
Kelsier recruited the underworld’s elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.
But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel’s plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she’s a half-Skaa orphan, but she’s lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.
In Short
This isn’t the first novel that I’ve read by Brandon Sanderson but it is my first series. Lately, I’ve been having a
craving for anything relating to the fantasy, sci-fi, or dystopian fiction genres and that is part of the reason I was attracted to the first novel, Mistborn: The Final Empire. The other reason I chose to read this book was because of how much I enjoyed reading Sanderson’s other book, Elantris.
The first thing I want to say about Sanderson’s writing is that is typically starts off slow, and although that can typically dissuade someone from finishing a novel, the buildup in his books and perfect and keeps you wanting to read more.
One of the things I loved about this series was the world that Sanderson created. The series’ layout reminded me of Harry Potter because every move the characters made seemed like it had a purpose that was
ultimately revealed in the end. I’m warning you that most of your guesses and expectations will be wrong by the end of the series because Sanderson did a good job directing the reader onto the wrong path (only to have the truth leave you stunned).
Another thing I enjoyed, were the characters. Vin, Kelsier, Elend, Spook and Sazed were a couple of my favorites, and I liked a few more that I won’t mention (so I don’t give anything away). Each of the characters had a personality and flare that you associated them with and at the end of the series, some of those reputations were still intact and others were shattered. That’s one of the reasons I was drawn to Sanderson’s characters, you expected them to be something and they didn’t always fulfill your expectations.
Despite the fact I didn’t like some of the dialogue between certain characters and wished that there had been more between others, I really enjoyed the series. I definitely recommend reading this series and Sanderson’s other novel Elantris.
Thanks for reading! I’m off to find out what I am going to read next!

sequel (but they are). Today, it was announced that high school senior, Paloma Kwiatkowski was cast as Thalia in the upcoming Percy Jackson and the Sea Monsters movie directed by Thor Freudenthal and set for release on March 26, 2013.

there hasn’t been much major news lately. I just read
the series on the big screen. Lionsgate has already confirmed the release date of the next movie in the Hunger Games film franchise, November 22, 2013. Of course, the movie will be based on the sequel to the beloved series, Catching Fire. There hasn’t been any more details about the series yet, but if when we get wind of news about Catching Fire or the Hunger Games we will be sure to post it.
night- if you haven’t already heard- the ninth book in the House of Night series, “Destined”, cover was revealed.
