Book Review: The Mistborn Series

Series: Mistborn
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Fantasy
Number of Books: 3
Rating: 4.5/5

Background on the Novel

Brandon Sanderson, fantasy’s newest master tale spinner, author of the acclaimed debut Elantris, dares to turn a genre on its head by asking a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? What kind of world results when the Dark Lord is in charge? The answer will be found in the Mistborn Trilogy, a saga of surprises and magical martial-arts action that begins in Mistborn.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the “Sliver of Infinity,” reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler’s most hellish prison. Kelsier “snapped” and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.
Kelsier recruited the underworld’s elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.
But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel’s plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she’s a half-Skaa orphan, but she’s lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.

In Short

This isn’t the first novel that I’ve read by Brandon Sanderson but it is my first series.  Lately, I’ve been having a craving for anything relating to the fantasy, sci-fi, or dystopian fiction genres and that is part of the reason I was attracted to the first novel, Mistborn: The Final Empire.  The other reason I chose to read this book was because of how much I enjoyed reading Sanderson’s other book, Elantris.

The first thing I want to say about Sanderson’s writing is that is typically starts off slow, and although that can typically dissuade someone from finishing a novel, the buildup in his books and perfect and keeps you wanting to read more.

One of the things I loved about this series was the world that Sanderson created.  The series’ layout reminded me of Harry Potter because every move the characters made seemed like it had a purpose that was ultimately revealed in the end.  I’m warning you that most of your guesses and expectations will be wrong by the end of the series because Sanderson did a good job directing the reader onto the wrong path (only to have the truth leave you stunned).

Another thing I enjoyed, were the characters. Vin, Kelsier, Elend, Spook and Sazed were a couple of my favorites, and I liked a few more that I won’t mention (so I don’t give anything away).  Each of the characters had a personality and flare that you associated them with and at the end of the series, some of those reputations were still intact and others were shattered. That’s one of the reasons I was drawn to Sanderson’s characters, you expected them to be something and they didn’t always fulfill your expectations.

Despite the fact I didn’t like some of the dialogue between certain characters and wished that there had been more between others, I really enjoyed the series.  I definitely recommend reading this series and Sanderson’s other novel Elantris.

Thanks for reading! I’m off to find out what I am going to read next!

“Thalia” from PJO is Cast

After the disappointment of the first Percy Jackson movie, I definitely didn’t think they would make a
sequel (but they are).  Today, it was announced that high school senior, Paloma Kwiatkowski was cast as Thalia in the upcoming Percy Jackson and the Sea Monsters movie directed by Thor Freudenthal and set for release on March 26, 2013.

“The film shoots in Vancouver, which will be convenient for Kwiatkowski, since she is a high school student there who got the role after her very first audition. She signed for one picture, with options for two more where, if the series continues, her character takes on a greater level of importance.”

What do you guys thinks about Paloma Kwiatkowski as Thalia?

The Hunger Games: Movie Review

Last Friday morning, I was able to attend the midnight premiere for the Hunger Games movie.  As a huge fan of the series, I thought I would have a number of critiques of the movie, but after seeing it, I believed that the movie lived to the “hype” created by the director, cast, and other reviewers.

Typically when I go see a movie that has been adapted from a book that I’ve read, I have to note every little difference between the movie and the book (that’s why no one likes to sit next me in the theater), but I have gotten better at realizing that the time restraints placed on the film crew don’t allow for everything in the novel to be put on screen.   Although, I believe that they did a good job translating the novel from page to stage.

I’m going to start with talking about Jennifer Lawrence’s role as Katniss.  Before I saw the movie, I thought that Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t the best fit for Katniss because I felt she was too old and wouldn’t do the character complete justice, but I was proved wrong because I believe Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job as Katniss.  She did a great job showing the different sides of Katniss, and she could easily switch between being tough and hardcore to compassionate and caring.

I also thought Josh Hutcherson was a better Peeta than I thought he would be.  Although Hutcherson doesn’t completely embody my image of Peeta,  I thought he did a good job illustrating Peeta’s character and bringing him to life.

I thought one major downside of the movie was the pace of the Rue/Katniss interaction.  I absolutely loved Amandla Stenberg as Rue, and I thought she was the perfect fit for the role, but I wish the reason behind Katniss’ relationship with Rue would have been explained  because I felt like the non readers didn’t get the same reaction to Rue that the readers did.

Overall, I find it incredible that a book has the ability to leave an imprint on the lives of readers and non readers alike.  These past few months I’ve heard the same (cliched but true) phrases regarding the Hunger Games.  For instance, “I finished read the  book in 3 days,” or, “I don’t like to read, but I loved the Hunger Games.”   Despite the fact these lines are somewhat overused, I believe that they describe the key to a great novel- the ability to transcend gender, age, the views of readers and non readers, etc.- and Suzanne Collins does just that which is what makes the Hunger Games amazing.

In Short

I have always  been a huge fan of Cassandra Clare’s work, but I absolutely adored Clockwork Prince.  It was by far one of the best books I have read in a long time.  The sequel had the petrfect amount of suspense, surprise, action, and romance in it an it definitely kept me reading for hours.  I expected this book to be great but it was much more than that.  I went to bed at 11:00 almost every night reading and woke up at 7.  If you have read Clare’s City of Bones series or Clockwork Angel you will not be disappointed in Clockwork Prince.  I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are major suprises and revelations in this book.  I nearly sprung up out of my seat plenty of times while reading. (especially because I am a Jem and Tessa shipper) *hint *hint

I am an avid reader, and I believe there are two main classifications of books.  There are books we read to have a bit of fun, and the books that make us remeber why we wanted to read it in the first place.  Clockwork Prince was a book that made me remember why I love reading and it rekindled my love for reading.  The feeling is almost electric, and the writing helps put me into the character’s shoes.  While reading Clare’s book, I couldn’t help but feel that constant jolt of adrenaline; despite the fact, I was laying on my bed.  One of the reasons I love to read is so I can escape my everyday life and become someone else (almost like Tessa’s powers).    Cassandra Clare is absolutely brilliant, and if she doesn’t know that already, I hope she is reading.  She is an inspiration to me as a writer, and she has definitely earned a spot in my top 10 list of authors.

Hope you enjoy reading,

Mingakatara

Sorry Sorry Sorry (and good news)

Hello, is anyone still reading?  If so, then I am so sorry that I haven’t posted for about a month or two.  I was overwhelmed with school and sports and friends (and my computer broke), and I hadn’t gotten a chance to blog.  I totally understand that I missed out on posting the Hunger Games trailer, and I didn’t mention that Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare just came out.  I haven’t reviewed the past three books I’ve just read, but I promise I’ll be better.  I finally got a computer, and I will make an effort to blog every other week (at least).

On a different note, I am planning on getting my own domain.  Soon the The World of Books will no longer be the World of Books, but the site will still have the same layout and themes as this site.  Although, I am expanding the blog to not just reading but writing as well.  I am a huge poet and writer, and I would love to share that with you guys.  I would also love to hear some of your work, so I plan on focusing the new site on reading and writing.

Again I’m sorry everybody, but thanks for reading,

Mingakatara

“City of Bones” Screenplay

Hey guys,

Long time no post and I’m sorry it’s been a while.  I’ve been itching to post something, but I’ve been incredibly busy (and there hasn’t been much major news lately.  I just read here that the “City of Bones” has finally gotten screenwriter, Marlene King.

If you enjoy Pretty Little Liars, then I’m sure you’ll be excited to know that King is the runner of the show.  She has also done screenplay for “Just My Luck” and “Now and Then”.  She tweeted earlier:

“They’re making a movie of the Mortal Instruments and I’m happy to say [I'm] working on the script.”

Hopefully, there will be some more news on the movie soon (like who the rest of the cast will be), but I guess this is it for now.

Thanks for reading guys,

Mingakatara
